Home Guided Walking Holidays Sierra Nevada Spain

Wildflower Week Itinerary

Day 1 Saturday

After being met at the Airport we transfer to Alqueria de Morayma (Granada or Almeria (Malaga 50 Euro Surcharge)).

Day 2 Sunday

Walk from Morayma through Lobras and Timar 4 / 5 hours
A great walk from the hotel out into the surrounding countryside, walking through fields of wildflower and visiting two very traditional white washed villages, before meeting the minibus for the short drive back to the hotel. On this walk, we take in the flora of the arable land, primarily olive and almond groves, which house a huge variety of wild flowers, interesting insects, birds and reptiles.

Day 3 Monday

Short drive from hotel
A beautiful walk taking in the famous writer Gerald Brenan’s favourite afternoon paseo. We walk from the writer’s old house in the tranquil village of Yegen, out into the local campo, to his favourite place in Las Alpujarras. We walk through fields of wildflower to a beautiful ancient water deposit, which is surrounded by olive groves and stunning wildlife.

Day 4 Tuesday

Rio Trevelez 5/6 hours
We travel to the highest village in Spain, famous for ‘jamon’, air cured ham, for a beautiful walk along the Rio Trevelez. Here, there is a wide variety of wild flowers and trees due to the wild crags and running streams. We walk for 2 hours before we ascend the left flank of the valley for stunning views of the river below. We take a gentle walk back into Trevelez along a well trodden mule track. Back in Trevelez we will sample some of the famous ham over a refreshing drink.

Day 5 Wednesday

Sierra Nevada 3000 meter ridge 6/8 hours
We drive to the highest point possible in the Sierra Nevada (2650 metres). After leaving the vehicles we walk along Acequia Berchules, a waterway, exploring the surrounding terrain for alpine species whilst enjoying the vast views of Mulhacen and the Trevelez valley. We aim to walk and see herds of Ibex, lots of mountain bird species (Golden Eagle, Choughs) and Alpine species endemic to the Sierra Nevada before returning to the hotel.

Day 6 Thursday

Trip to Granada & the Alhambra A visit to the Alambra and then to the moorish baths for pampering if you wish (30 Euro extra), or simply enjoy some free time in the historic city of Granada.

Day 7 Friday

Sierra Mecina – La Taha 6/7 hours Our day starts with a short drive to Sierra Mecina for a walk which takes in the best of the Taha valley. We descend through dog rose and rock rose following an ancient track before entering the valley. We then walk through the traditional, unspoilt villages of the lower Taha, cross an ancient Roman bridge before ascending Sierra Mecina using another track once, and still used by mules. We return to the vehicle after walking through a heady Juniper and Pine forest.

Day 8 Saturday

Transfer to Airport
